SAVE THE DATE: May 15-16 as part of the European Year of Cultural Heritage, the EuropeanaTech conference will take place on the “ss Rotterdam” in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

Register your interest and get an invite to purchase your ticket as soon as the Early Bird tickets are available.

EuropeanaTech is about the practical application of research concepts and the latest technologies to digital libraries. For this edition of EuropeanaTech, they concentrate on the three D’s: Data, Discovery and Delivery. Intertwined are the concepts of participation, linked and big data; language and tools. Across all the subjects we are looking for the inclusion of rigorous evaluations of the outcomes.

The conference will be a mix of invited speakers and successful presentations from this call. We are not expecting an academic paper but a lively presentation of work that you have been doing under the subjects below. We are as interested in the glorious failures as we are in the gorgeous successes.

Submission Guidelines

Please submit your proposal by February 7. It should contain a title, an abstract of 250 words, some key words and a two sentence evaluation of its practical benefits or learning. The Programme Committee will evaluate all the submitted proposals and will notify you before the end of February if your proposal has been selected for presentation. There is room for up to 15 presentations to be given in the conference as a result of this call. The conference fee and your travelling costs will be covered if your presentation is chosen.

Submissions are to be made via EasyChair: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=eurtech18

List of Topics

DATA

1. User generated content and metadata: from crowdsourcing of descriptive data and transcription projects to Wikidata and structured data on the Commons to how to combine institutional and user generated metadata. We are looking for what has worked, or what hasn’t and can be done better.

2. Enhancing the results of digitisation: various applications connect the act of digitisation with required data processes for the use of the data. What are the latest techniques, have they been applied at scale, do they work in the in the more challenging audio-visual areas? We are interested in everything from 3D capture, OCR, sound/video labelling, named entity recognition and feature detection, to machine or deep learning to help classify and categorise the digitised data.

3. Decentralisation vs Centralisation: We know that aggregation works as a process to bring together disparate data, standardised, normalise it and make it available to other parties, but we also know that this is labour intensive, very hierarchical, and does not distribute knowledge and expertise. On the other hand more decentralised ways of working have yet to be really proven in practice. Presentations that give the latest thinking on how we can best enable access to cultural heritage data and reduce friction costs are welcome, particularly with evaluation on the relative strengths and weaknesses.

4. Multilingualism: Google has more or less cracked full text translation of mainstream languages, but we are still struggling with niche languages and metadata. Presentations that evaluate the current thinking or give insights into the latest work in the area would fit well in this section of the creation and use of multilingual data in Cultural Heritage.

DISCOVERY

1. User Interaction: Search is still the dominant means of gaining access to the wealth of cultural heritage data now online, but does it represent that wealth? Search is ungenerous: it withholds information, and demands a query, what are the alternatives? Papers on generous interfaces and frictionless design are sought to shed new light on how Cultural Heritage can show itself more deeply. Evaluating the benefits and weaknesses to the user in the process.

2. Artificial Intelligence: For this subject topics ranging from machine learning to neural network-based approaches to Cultural Heritage are welcome. This includes applications of AI from image feature recognition to natural language processing, and from building search interfaces on features/colour similarity between images and discovery to the use of human metadata and computer vision. We would also be interested in the audio and moving image equivalents. Anything dealing with the combination of metadata tags, image similarity and machine learning based on user input would be very relevant as would Artificial Intelligence technology for content curation.

DELIVERY

1. Digital Innovation: The corporate culture of our memory institutions, set up to preserve and conserve our heritage and the organisation of digital innovation are not a marriage made in heaven. The Labs/Skunkworks model is increasingly seen at best as an interim stage and at worst as a dead end for organising innovation. So how should GLAMs go about organising for digital innovation? How can governments and/or funders best support digital transformation of the GLAM-sector?

2. Evaluation techniques: Evaluation should be part of everything we do in the publicly funded space of most of cultural heritage, but the how is struggling to gain a common language, one that we can apply so funders get a picture of the project within its broader context. Evaluation has been requested to be part of all papers submitted but the latest in techniques and agreement on a framework for the sector would constitute useful insights.

3. Open source community: What is the health and standing of the open source community within the cultural heritage sector? Does it thrive or is it a nice idea that is not a reality? How can projects with a limited lifespan create and sustain products for the sector at large while developing and engaging a thriving community around them? From digitisation to search engine development should there be more emphasis on the need for vibrant open source communities and more resources to realizing them? Papers on barriers and successes are requested.

#Liberiamolacultura (#FreeCulture) is the hashtag we chose for the first edition of Digital Invasions.

Our goal is to build a bridge between the physical and the digital cultural worlds and to provide both a gateway and forum for cultural organizations and associations or any private companies involved in tourism and cultural promotion.

#OSTAGGIDIGITALI

The goal of the project “Digital Hostages” is to train curators, staff and managers in the cultural sector in the use of the Internet and Social Media.

How does it work?

The museums and institutions which join the project will be taken ‘hostage’ by a member of our community (an Invader), we will choose among those we deem most suitable, depending on the type of request, who will be the invader to take them hostage. The hostage will spend an entire day at the property and will be responsible for training the staff in the use of the Internet and Social media and free exploring new ideas and projects in collaboration with the museum or institution.

Who are our Invaders and what do they do?

Our consultants are digital strategists, marketing managers, bloggers, communications and marketing professionals. They will act as facilitators in the use of social network and they will devise and manage promotional strategies through the use of new media.

The G. Fedrigoni Foudation Istocarta, appreciating the value of the initiative, promoted an “Invasion of the Paper Universe. From its history to the technique in paper-making” and it reserved two dates for the “invaders”, 25th April at 10.30 a.m. and 30th April at 3.00 p.m., by opening the precious Historical Archive of Miliani Fabriano Paper Mills to the public.

The 1st step was dedicate to the history of Fabriano Paper Mills from 1782, narrated across documents which have been conserved at the Historical Archive of Miliani Fabriano Paper Mills, the first Enterprise Archive acknowledged as being of “noteworthy historical value” in Italy (20th July 1964). Great interest and curiosity of many “invaders” who have admired, in the first time, the little museum annexed to the Archive where there are some tolls for the hand-made papermaking (hand-moulds, metal wire, dies, etc.) and some of the most beautiful watermarks produced by Miliani Ppaer Mills since the end of 1700 (that are part of a collection of more than 1,500 pieces, the “Raccolta del Duca Tosti di Valminuta” preserved in the Archive): artistic watermarks “in chiaro-scuro” (clear and dark shadows), that reproduced portraits of famous Italian and foreign characters; watermarks commissioned by historical Made in Italy Companies (Olivetti, Liquore Strega, Brioschi, Borsalino, Fiat, etc.); precious watermarks for banknotes.

From little museum to the heart of Archive, in the “Reference room” where some documents representative of the history Miliani Paper Mills, dated since 1782 (the date of the foundation of Miliani Fabriano Paper Mills) were showed: “Copia-lettere” (registers where the outgoing letters of Paper Mills were copied) with important name of Italian and foreign clients, like F. Rosaspina, G.B. Bodoni, M. Leopardi, A. Canova, R. Morghen, etc.; old price lists; wonderful and multicolour samples of paper; photos since 1871 conserved in the “Fondo Fototeca” with more than 1.500 historical photos, testimony of industrial archaeological , architectural, landscape heritage, of society and paper culture. A historical heritage who has given and gives yet an important contribute for the history of paper and paper science in Italy and in the world.

The TgR Marche (television news) participated to the “invasion” and realized a video, available on www.istocarta.it, in the VIDEO section.

The two rooms of the Archive were “invaded” by multicolor “invaders masks”. There was a special atmosphere. The main features of this 1st step were culture, curiosity and irony. At the end, the usual photo. The “invaders” have worn the “invaders mask” and… INVASION MADE!!

The 2nd step was dedicate to the “technique”. Dr Livia Faggioni (Coordinator) spoke about the ways of realization and use of the tools necessary for the fabrication of hand-made paper through the historical paper heritage inherited by Miliani Fabriano Paper Mills: waxes, dies, hand-moulds preserved by G. Fedrigoni Foundation ISTOCARTA. After a short introduction, in the little museum annexed to the Archive, was shown a video on the hand-made papermaking, realized by the FABRIANO Fedrigoni Spa Paper Mill, in the “Vat division”, to enter after in the details of tools. The “hand-mould”, principal tool for the hand-made paper production, was the protagonist. From the analysis of its different morphological features to the different ways of realization and the result on the paper: “”laid” mould and “wove”mould, with clear watermark (“in chiaro”) or clear and dark watermark (“in chiaro-scuro”), etc.

The 2nd room of Archive has hosted the tools necessary for the production of a copper “die” (positive and negative die) to impress the watermark on the metal wire of the hand-mould (clear and dark watermark): from the engraver box for the engraving wax (from where is produced the die); to the graphite box, until to the tubs for the electroplating process (to produce the die). Very interesting the demonstration of engraver Gilberto Micucci (emplyee of FABRIANO paper mill).

Many questions and much curiosity for the 2nd step of the “Universe paper invasion”. As for the 1st step, the two rooms of the Archive were “invaded” by multicolor “invaders masks”. At the end, the usual photo. The “invaders” have worn the “invaders mask” and…INVASION MADE!!

It’s already over, “Invasioni Digitali”, the week of digital cultural revolution which we already called out to some time ago to support this museum movement also here in Germany.

In the role of “German Ambassadors” we were delighted to watch many invasions happen, we organized and accomplished our own ones – but also, we tried to carry the initiative further by inviting and calling out to many other actors of the culture and social media field into participating.

Now I would like to try and give an overview as well as make a little evaluation of our first participation in the Digital Invasions.

What happened here, what happened there.

Italy had already kept in mind the idea of “Invasioni Digitali” from last year. Already in 2013 there had been 225 invasions taking place all over the „boot“ – and this despite the “not-so-ideal” conditions in institutional and bureaucratic terms. This year, the revolution moved on with even more force, so that the numbers almost doubled: 402 invasions took place from 24. April to 4 May – not without various fights for free entries, photo permission or even only being allowed to bring the tours to the museums.

Even so, and even if Italy is still fighting with a rather conservative management of their cultural heritage, there have been changes at some points. During Invasioni it became clear: many museums have a motivation to open up, see the potential of the crowd and the digital media, various cultural institutions already have a digital presence and use it.

My favourite example from Invasions 2014 is the MADRE Museum in Naples, which invited to a #yellowinvasion matching with their building’s colour. The event finally hosted 120 invaders in yellow dresscode, who were following each step of the museum’s director (with his rigorously yellow sneakers ) , while MADRE itself tweeted, posted and shot instagrams to finish off in total elegance by publishing its own, proud Storify of the event.

This is but one of many great examples: many museums and culture sites organized extra opening times, offered special tours or welcomed their invaders with their doors already wide open.

What distinguishes most of the events: a real enthusiasm and enjoyment, a celebration of culture and its liberation, that simply captivates and evokes great sympathy. Even Dario Franceschini, Minister of Culture and Tourism, expressed his support of the initiative through a Tweet on the second last day of the Invasion Week.

No wonder that this enthusiasm has a contagious effect: the 402 Italian invasions soon were joined by various others in Northern Europe: two in Berlin, one in Oldenburg, four in Munich, one in Copenhagen.

On top of that, the History Museum of Bosnia and Herzegovina in Sarajevo invited to invasion, and further than that came Baltimore, Sydney, and – in collaboration with Instagramers Rio – an Invasion at Museo do Arte do Rio.

Here things flowed a bit less quick – maybe due to a month of May already full of initiatives and the short timing that remained for organizing. Still, they flowed.

We ourselves organized two invasions in Munich – one, in a greater framework and with a broad spectrum of options at Munich’s cultural center PLATFORM, the second one, in a smaller group and led by the director in person, at Munich’s Valentin Karlstadt Musäum.

In our role of Ambassadors, we also tried to pass on the idea and invited people from our network to join the Invasions and organize their own events.

The world needs another white night, and you know that, sooooo… we’re warning you in advance: get ready because we won’t accept any defection!

Friday, December 13th, from 8.00 pm to 2.00 am stay tuned with friends, relatives, strangers, lovers, cousins , husbands and wives, children…charge the batteries of computers, tablets and be prepared to spend the night with us.

The official hashtag of the night will be #NBTW because we want to be more specific this time and split topics in order to give people the chance to pick the subjects. We have choosen to write hashtags in English to let you, non italian speakers, understand and be able to participate. We want you!

Here are the topics and suggestions on what to tweet with the specific hashtags:

#NBTWliterature – poetry, prose, pieces from books, words and quotes, proverbs, reading.
Here you can post your pieces, quotes that you love, videos of you reading a passage (using Vine or Instagram, for example), a video of an author reading his piece, etc..

We would like to ask you one more thing, and we know that each of you will respond with enthusiasm. The white night was not created for this purpose, but it seemed right to dedicate it in some way to an event that has touched us as a Country. On november the 18th, Sardinia, our Sardinia, was stabbed through the heart by a terrible tragedy. The web has mobilized in the night to try to give informations, support, help or just comfort to those affected, obviously together with all the volunteers and the institutions.

Our proposal is this: to open a fundraiser to retrieve a place of culture that has been damaged in those days and we would like you to suggest your preferences to us. You only need to use hashtag #NBTWsardegna to tell us which building, or site, you think we have to open the fundraiser for. We will collect your records and choose the one that has received the greatest number of preferences.

Once you have chosen the building we’ll open the fundraiser and will notify you how to donate.

Well…our indecent proposal is again the same: would you like to spend the night with us?!? 😀

The cultural sector has always been facing the great challenge of building its audience, but the digital shift changed radically how cultural heritage is made, disseminated, distributed, accessed, consumed and monetised. One of the most important revolutions is that visitors’ role changed dramatically, shifting from passive observers to active participants and contents producers. This workshop explored different ways of communicating cultural contents with the use of new media and showed how a greater audience can be reached by combining the power of social media and storytelling.

The workshop was hosted by Fondazione Sistema Toscana as part of the Europeana Space project activities, in cooperation with Invasioni Digitali, and took place in the framework of the Internet Festival event.
