Create + StoryTell + Share = Let’s celebrate the 10th Anniversary together!

From May 12th to May 21st, 2023 the Digital Invasions are back!

Over 5,000 places invaded in Italy and around the world, many people involved in #invasionidigitali, a project born in 2013, now on its tenth anniversary, a real movement for culture. This year’s leitmotiv will be Create + StoryTell + Share = Nostalgia <3

The term Y2K refers to the period between 1990 and 2000, in which we were preparing for the arrival of the so-called “millennium bug” which could have caused computer systems to malfunction due to their programming based on two digits for the year instead of four. The fear of the digital apocalypse turned into a sort of fascination for the future and the arrival of the new millennium, which led to an important social and cultural change.

Similarly, the Digital Invasions were a form of grassroots protest that took place in Italy and then all over the world starting from 2013. The Invasions saw groups of people passionate about culture, creators, bloggers, engage in sharing actions of our cultural heritage, with the aim of promoting knowledge and the beauty of the territories.

Either way, these moments remain important as they marked a period of great change in the history of digital and non-digital technology and culture. Nostalgia for these experiences stems mainly from the fact that they represent a moment of transition between the past and the future, a time when the world seemed to be constantly evolving and changing.

The approach to technologies has changed radically in recent years thanks above all to ease of use and affordable costs. A new approach that took place above all thanks to mobile devices and the diffusion of the use of the network on the move. Today people are almost completely familiar with these devices and with social media which have made it possible to share a thought, an activity, an emotion, an experience hic et nunc, such as a visit to a museum, the observation of a work of art, even a selfie, is not only immortalized but shared in the moment. And that sharing is not just sharing in an experience, an emotion but becomes a means – visual – of digital word of mouth for the museum. The goal therefore remains to spread the culture of using the internet and social media for the promotion and dissemination of cultural heritage.

For 2023, the invitation is to have fun, organize an invasion where and how you prefer, and celebrate together! <3

The hashtag to use is still #invasionidigitali which will be accompanied by the official tag of each individual invasion.

This 24-month project specifically aims at boosting the digital education readiness of the private owners of historic houses, helping them to face the dramatic impact of the COVID-19 crisis on cultural tourism.  The central element of HERIT is the creation of a massive open online course (MOOC) tailored for private owners of historic houses. The course will aim at developing and enhancing the expertise of the owners themselves in business development and in the use of digital tools, as well as their knowledge of the regulatory and legal framework in the cultural heritage sector at the national and European level. EHH as an association represents the primary target group of the expected outputs of the project. This is why EHH will play a leading role in relation to different aspects of the implementation of the project itself and in particular: the collection of information and statistical data regarding the private historic houses sector; the maintenance of contact and exchange of information with the national historic houses associations and private owners to ensure that the content of the MOOC is truly responsive to the real needs of its target groups; and the promotion and dissemination of the online course.

So that we can bring culture directly to you, Europeana Communicators invites everybody to a Digital Aperitivo where we can come together to celebrate culture in all its forms.

November 11th, From 4.30PM to 5.30PM (CET), resonating with Europeana’s theme “Recover, Rebuild, Grow” – we will reflect together on the role of culture in this tough period and will ask people to invade the web with culture. In this way we can revitalise our connection to our rich multicultural European Community; to be inspired, creative, while at the same time, have some fun. If you are signed up to Europeana 2021, you can join us for a Zoom call first…at 4.30 PM (CET) to provide instructions on how to participate.

Need an idea? Try searching for images on Europeana. You can choose between Collections, Type of media, Country, etc and you can also use the “can I use this” filter and select “yes” for openly licensed content and follow our guidelines to appropriately credit the source’.

During the Digital Aperitivo Europeana Communicators will be there to support, inspire, and interact with you.

What we celebrate:

• literature – poetry, prose, pieces from books, words and quotes, proverbs, reading. Post your favourite pieces, quotes that you love, videos of you reading a passage, a video of an author reading his piece, etc.
• music – every genre of music, songs, videos, jazz, pop, rock, folk, etc. even your own song if you are an artist (or believe you are). Here you can feast on music of all kinds, and if you’re a musician why not sing/play/whistle your own song for the occasion? Let us listen to the music of your land; something that comes from far away yet makes us want to take the first train to reach you and listen to you in person.
• art – paintings, statues, museums, art galleries, archeological sites and libraries and archives and so on. Let us feel the art in all its forms, a museum that has touched your heart, a framework that tells us its story or maybe yours. If you are a GLAM invite us into your gallery, albeit virtually, and inspire us with your art and your story.
• food – recipes, tips, wine pairings and everything that tickles the palate. Organise a virtual tasting at home and…bon appetit! Let us visit your land through its gastronomy and the wines that it produces so that we can join you live to test them ‘for ourselves’!
• travel – lets travel virtually around your cities, villages, towns, our country. Let us discover that hidden corner in pictures or videos that you really cannot forget.
